About Jamaica, W.I.

Out of Many One People

Although Jasmine and I have been in the U.S. for a substantial part of our lives, we are still proud of our heritage. . .Jamaica, W.I.  The motto of Jamaica is “Out of Many, One People”.  For those who are not familiar with Jamaica, a brief history of Jamaica is found at this link - beginning with its discovery by Columbus in 1494.  (Click on the Caricatures above.) . . .                        Jean

About Jamaican Jerk

Jerk, now widely popular throughout the world, originated in Jamaica.  The exact origins of the term are not universally agreed upon; but, almost all agree that the cooking method to which it refers originated  “Maroons” who lived in Cockpit Country in Jamaica, and who likely learned some of the methodology from the indigenous Arawak Indians of Jamaica.  There are almost as many stories of  the origins of Jerk as there are Jerk recipes, which are now abundant.

However, we like this story of its origins provided by Jennifer Clarke of the Jerkhouse restaurant in Toronto (Click here or on the $500 bill with the picture of Nanny) [see also "Nanny" below]

.Jennifer Clark's website can be visited here.Jerkhouse (Presently out of commission)

Nanny

Nanny was one of the Maroon leaders (runaway slaves)  who fought successfully against the British and resulted in the British leaving the Maroons alone - in effect, ceding to the Maroons the territory they had settled. Her role in Jamaican history was so significant that today her likeness is on the Jamaican $500 bill.  To read about Nanny, click on the bill. .
